Cyclone Spoiler II
|

|
This is our Spoiler II with new springs spec'd 1" lower than factory ride height.
The picture above is not of our Spoiler II but is a good example of one in original form.
The above pictures from the days when stock car racing WAS stock car racing! You could go into the showroom and buy the same car you watched win the race over the weekend! This is our 1969 Cyclone Spoiler II Dan Gurney Special project. This is just how we got the car with the exception of the wheels. The original wheels are in the trunk but tires were flat so we installed a set of 16" mesh wheels just to keep it up in the air and rollable which actually look pretty good. This car is listed in the Registry and is one of 47 that have been accounted for. |

Some history on this car as we know it, We purchased it from a Friend in Maryland who bought it in 1991 and never had the time to restore it. It was running and undamaged when he bought it. Sometime in the early 90's a tornado came through the area and damaged the Left Front fender(as seen in the pics), he found a replacement fender at a Carlisle swap meet so we have a new fender for it. One day a few years ago I was informed that the car was going up for sale, my response was "No it's not, it's already sold!" and we became the new owners. Information is extremely scarce on these cars and there is nearly nothing on the web regarding them! There were 353 Spoiler IIs produced and that number was split up between the Dan Gurney and Cale Yarborough cars. The Spoiler II was 1" longer than the Talladega and produced for Nascar Homologation rules to compete against Dodge and it's Daytona.

I want to drive this to what is left of the local cruise-ins this year so we set out to make her roadworthy again. This meant replacing all the brakes and master cylinder and I even sprung for new suspension. One of the first things though was to change out the damaged fender so here we start taking everything apart.
The headlights were all original with the exception of one and when we turned them on each one slowly blew out so it was at this time we picked up a new set of halogens.
Here we have the fender off....some surface rust but nothing serious.
Even further apart but with the replacement fender installed.....we painted the headlight mounting plates while there.
We did some preliminary straightening on the original fender...it is salvageable and will be saved as an emergency spare.
All back together except the inner lights which we had to wait for the local parts store to get in.
The original rotors were paper thin and badly rusted from sitting for so many years.
We installed new rotors....the calipers were a tough one to find as nobody stocked them or said with any certainty that they could get them...so we shipped off the originals and had them rebuilt.
This is after the new brakes but we had not installed the new suspension yet. We ordered new springs all around from Eaton spring and I asked them to go 1" lower than stock. In this picture the rear springs have home made shackles to lift the car up in the rear.
Although not quite settled in the front, here is a shot with new springs all around.
Here we are on the track preparing for the Winged Warrior Reunion parade lap around Talladega Superspeedway.
More to come soon....
