1990 Mustang LX Convertible
25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

The first of Ford's Feature Convertible Mustangs

We were not looking for another Mustang when I heard about this car being for sale and I nearly dismissed any idea of buying it but it was that nagging feeling in the back of my mind that told me I had to have it! I have known this car since the day it was new and knew the original owner as well. One day I ran into the owner and asked her how the Mustang was doing to which she replied "good but we have decided to sell it". The problem was, how do I talk my wife Mindy into seeing things my way in that we had to have this car? The car is an Automatic so the first hurdle was cleared since Mindy prefers automatics for everyday driving...that was the easy part. The answer was not hard to come by...I took her to see the car and drove it, she loved it but something had to go in order to get this one. The answer was to sell her '87 GT Convertible(also featured on this site). Things just kind of fell into place from there....a friend was broadsided by a pickup with no insurance or proper tags(but that's another story) and his prized '89 Mustang LX was totalled. He decided to purchase the GT from us and the Green LX was then ours. The original owner was happy in knowing that I was getting the car since she knew my long background with Mustangs and that it would get a good home. Pictured above is the LX when we first got it.....Good condition with original paint but needing a little restoration work. I received all the records and documentation on this car including the original  window sticker(followers of this site know how I love to buy Mustangs that are all original and with documentation as opposed to highly or even mildly modified ones with an unknown history).

The top had been replaced once already and is in fairly decent condition. The cat-back exhaust had also been replaced by a local Goodyear dealer(dont get me started with the work they did) with and expensive incorrect replacement exhaust(no stainless tailpipes) and incorrect nuts(metric nut/standard stud mix) which are stripped causing an exhaust leak where the cat-back mounts to the Cat-pipe.....

Typical Ford Mustang Convertible Leather interior....Unless you really keep up on these factory leather covers, the Sun and age take their toll. We will be working on this soon.....

The first order of business was to replace the original faded lights...nothing makes a car look worse than yellowed lights, not to mention the decreased visibility at night.

MUCH better, not only does it freshen the look of the car up a bit, you can see a LOT better at night!

Its all about the wheels....I used to collect intake manifolds...now I collect wheels. I had these sitting in a corner just waiting for a home. These wheels in my opinion are one of the cleanest looking wheels that will dress up any Mustang. I decided to try out the new Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 street tires on this car......all I can say is WOW!!! These tires are FANTASTIC, great dry traction and superior wet traction! A great tire at a bargain price....169mph speed rating and less than $80 each for 245/50 16(rear) and 225/50 16(front) and a 280 treadwear rating to top it off. The original wheels and tires are not being discarded, just put away to be refinished and used for shows or just a change of pace for that original look...

Totally stock and dirty....how long will this last?

About 3 days...the air filter needed replacement so that was a good enough excuse to install the MAC Cold air fenderwell kit. Surprisingly there was a noticeable seat of the pants feel to this mod. We also added a tune up using Motorsport 9mm wires and Motorcraft tune up parts. The original radiator looked a little rough on the inside so we opted for a 3 row replacement. The modifications are not going to get out of hand(this is not a race car) but there will be a few....although nothing that cannot be easily put back to original if needed.

11-4-00: WE'VE BEEN HIT!! Right out in the parking lot of Mindy's work, she was hit by a 15 passenger Ford Van pulling out of the parking place next to the car. You can see the white line of the parking space in the lower right corner of the picture which shows how far over the poor Mustang was pushed. The damage is to the Driver door, fender, bumper cover, header panel, hood and lights. Fortunately the woman who hit us left a note with her name and number(which is rare nowadays!). This made me sick because this is a car that has NEVER been hit. It does not appear as though any damage was done to the inner fenders.

12-15-00: After a month of phone tag and difficulties in contacting the person who hit us, it has FINALLY been put into the hands of their insurance company. The car was taken to the Body shop today for repair. We are going to kick in the extra money at this time and repaint the entire car since nearly half(if not more) of the car has to be painted anyway and the older finish could never match the new. More pictures coming soon......

Finished! The body and paint work is done. The only change made to the body was the addition of a factory Ford feature car wing(from the '92-'93 feature convertibles). We have also replaced the stock cat-back system with the Dynomax system and added a set of Ford Motorsport "B" lowering springs. Our next step is the interior, stay tuned.....

I have seen some discussions on web boards where people claim this is not an anniversary edition and that Ford went back and changed their records. These "conspiracy theories" hold no water, Ford has no interest in changing history....it does not benefit them financially nor does it make any logical sense. Brochures are made far in advance of the car which is why there are 2000 Cobra brochures and no actual cars. The decision to make this car the official 25th anniversary edition was late in the game therefore there were no brochures. Above is a copy from Ford Archives of my History 999 report on this car officially showing this car as the 25th anniversary Edition. ONLY these Green/white convertibles are 25th anniversary Editions even though ALL Mustangs produced from April on in 1989 had the badge on the dash.

For our interior we decided to add a little extra by designing a logo to sew into the headrest. We came up with this logo....done in green on a white headrest really sets things off.

Here is our new leather kit installed on the seat. This is the same high quality leather kit as our Lincoln Mark kits and is available from us for your Convertible as well. Just like the original in appearance but a much higher grade of leather is used. We can also add the 25th anniversary logo for a small additional fee.
