1965 Mustang Fastback

This is our 1965 Fastback project.

We came to own this car in a unique way...it is an original rust free California car and equipped factory as an A code 289 4V, automatic with console and Air conditioning. The original color is Twilight Turquoise with black standard interior. The original owner Kraig Ames had the desire to restore this fastback but no time and with 4 children leading the top of his priority list, he did not forsee the time to finish the car. Kraig did however have an interest in owning a Mustang SVO.

We had restored the 1986 Comp Prep SVO that originally belonged to Ken Schultz and was featured in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords but we really did not need more than one SVO....so a deal was struck and Kraig became the new owner of the SVO and we became the new owner of the fastback. Kraig now has a unique low mileage SVO that he can drive and tinker with while still allowing plenty of time to spend with the kids and we have a Fastback project that does not require rust repair to restore.

Kraig has already had a blast with the SVO and was invited by MM&FF to participate in a shootout which is now in the October 2002 issue of MM&FF.

In the picture above, You can see both cars  the  the day we made the swap, with the 65 in the background, the rear of the 86 SVO, and even our project SVT F-150 pulling it.

The underside of the car is nearly perfect and still shows the original red oxide finish on the floors!

The original power drum brakes will be converted to original Disc brakes with the factory 4 piston calipers. These are custom made adjustable lower control arms.

We have added a set of 16X8 Vintage 45 wheels with 225/50 16 Yokohama AVS Intermediate tires.

The disc brake conversion is done...much better than the antique drum style front brakes.

Next step is to remove the original tired 289.

Engine is removed and now it is time for a good scrubbing.

This is the ONLY rust in the entire car! We will repair this while the engine is out and the engine bay is detailed.

Here is the original engine after being removed from the car.

Here is the new 289 waiting to be installed....since we are more into restomod and not concours originality we painted the engine Ford Blue instead of the original black with gold valve covers found originally in '65 Mustangs. The intake manifold is a Ford Motorsport piece and is identical to the old Edelbrock F4B intake. The engine is stock with the exception of the intake and headers.
