SVO Frequently asked Questions |
|
Welcome to the SVP Unlimited SVO Myths and FAQ page. Here we will address some of the myths and most frequently asked questions regarding the '84-'86 Mustang SVO. If you would like to contribute to this page or have a question that you think others may have as well that should be listed here, please Contact Us.
Q. What size rear end is in the '86 SVO? Are all years the same? A. All SVO rear ends were 7.5", the
'84s were 3.45 ratios and in '85 they
Q. Are all SVO Mustangs equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes? A. Yes, all '84-'86 SVO Mustangs
were equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes.
Q. Did all SVOs come with the Bi-wing spoiler? A. No, some SVOs had the "bi-wing
delete" option. These cars had the standard one piece GT style rear spoiler
rather than the double "bi wing" as seen on most SVOs. This is a rare option.
Q. I was told that the ball joints in my SVO are not replaceable, is this true? A. Yes, this is true. The ball joints
are not replaceable and the whole control arm must be replaced.
Q. What is the difference between the '85 and '85.5 SVO? A. The '85.5 SVO marked a production
change for Ford. The intake manifold was changed, the injector size was
increased from 30lb to 35lb injectors. The EEC IV processor was changed
for improved performance (known as a "PE" processor). The exhaust was changed
from a single outlet to a dual outlet and the fuel pump system was changed
to a single in-tank pump from a dual pump system. The '85.5 SVO also received
the flush mount headlights but still had no third brake light (an easy way
to distinguish an '85.5 from an '86). These are just some of the easily
noticeable changes.
Q. My SVO has leather interior but no sunroof, I thought that these options came together? A. These options were available separately,
you could get cloth or leather with or without a sunroof. This myth was
started by a magazine article published some years ago that was incorrect.
Q. What is the purpose of the "fuel" switch on the console? A. The fuel switch controls the boost
level and timing curve. When switched to "unleaded" the boost is limited
to 9lbs and the timing curve is pulled back, when switched to "premium"
the boost level is raised to 15lbs and the timing curve is bumped up.
Q. My '84 SVO has a factory AM/FM radio with cassette but it does not have A/C and has manual windows and manual locks. Is my SVO a Comp prep (Competition prepared) model? A. No ,The early SVOs could be ordered
any way the buyer liked so these are known as "option delete" cars. The
official "comp prep" optioned cars had no radio or antenna and had block
off plates in the dash and on the fender. Comp prep cars have no radio
or A/C, manual windows and manual locks. Comp prep cars could be ordered
with Leather interior and you could also opt for the Bi-wing or get the
Bi-wing delete option. By '85 and '86, there were no longer choices on
this as everything became standard and the comp prep option was strictly,
no power windows or locks, no A/C and no radio. The comp preps also have
different spring codes on the door data sticker.
Q. Did the SVOs come with any other interior colors other than charcoal grey? A. No, All SVO Mustangs came with
Charcoal gray interior, either cloth or leather.
Q. I have seen pictures of an '84 SVO with open "netted" headrests and "SVO" decals on the fender. My '84 SVO does not have either of these things, my headrests are short and solid. Were these options? A. No, The pictures you saw were
probably of a pre-production prototype. There were many changes made before
final production and those features never made final production. All SVOs
had the same headrests.
Q. I have heard that the '84 SVO had stiffer shocks than the later ones, is this true? A. Yes, although all SVOs were equipped
with Koni shocks and struts, the '84s had a little stiffer valving. They
were softened up for '85 and '86 but the difference is very minor.
Q. I have seen other '84 SVO equipped with Quad shocks but my '84 has the "slapper bars". Was this an option? A. No, the earlier production SVOs
were equipped with the slapper bars and at some time in December of '83
they began the changeover to the Quad shock setup.
Q. My SVO appears to have 2 fuel pressure regulators, one on the fuel rail and one in line behind the intake, is this correct? A. No, your fuel pressure regulator
is located on the fuel rail, the other thing you see is called a "Pulse
Dampner" the earlier SVOs Dampner looks like a bell with an adjustment
screw while the later ones are non-adjustable. It is recommended not to
try to adjust this dampner. The purpose of the pulse dampner is to act
as a sort of fuel reservoir so that the engine does not starve for fuel
under sudden acceleration or boost.
Q. I recently looked at a car that was for sale that the owner claimed to be an '86 Mustang GT SVO. It had a 5.0 and the owner claimed that it was all original and that it was one of 700 made and that SVO put GT-40 heads on and gave heavier suspension. Is this true? A. No, The only engine ever available
in the SVO Mustang was the 2.3 Turbo. Some people confuse the Ford Motorsport
SVO aftermarket parts division with Special Vehicle Operations(SVO). These
were 2 totally separate divisions within Ford. Ford Motorsport SVO never
produced a car, only parts. The owner of that '86 is incorrect and it is
probably a regular GT with bolt-ons.
Q. What size are the wheels on the Mustang SVO? A. The wheels on the Mustang SVO
are 16" X 7" Cast aluminum wheels. This was the first Mustang to ever come
equipped with 16" wheels.
Q. Did SVOs ever come with Cruise control from the factory? A. No, The SVO Mustang was not available
with Cruise control as a factory option. There was a kit available for
Dealer installed cruise control which was the only way you could get Cruise
Control on an SVO.
